Chef John Howie’s restaurants, ranging from casual, scratch-cooking establishments to fine dining, are renowned for infusing innovation into evolving seasonal menus that feature the highest quality, sustainable meat and seafood with locally sourced ingredients.
In recognition of being chef and proprietor of some of the Seattle Area’s most prominent restaurants, Chef Howie was nominated Outstanding Restaurateur by the James Beard Foundation Awards in 2013 and has been invited to be guest chef at the James Beard House on five separate occasions. Chef Howie is also author of the cookbook Passion & Palate: Recipes for a Generous Table and is a sought-after culinary expert featured in local and national media, including Martha Stewart Living, The Today Show, The CBS Early Morning Show, Cooking Channel, Food Network, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times.
Chef John Howie is also the co-owner of the Wildwood Spirits Co., located in Bothell, Washington, that produces award-winning craft spirits using a local farm to distillery approach. Wildwood’s Stark Vatten Vodka, Kur Gin, and The Dark Door Bourbon have received critical international acclaim including Best in Show at the 2014 & 2017 World Wine and Spirits Competition in New York and Top 10 Spirit of The Year from Wine & Spirits Magazine and Double Gold Medal in the 2018 San Francisco International Spirits Competition.
In March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic presented an unprecedented business challenge that prompted Chef Howie to refocus his restaurants on reinvention, which resulted in the introduction of the now popular Seastar Family Meals, as well as Curbside Butcher Boxes and Sea Boxes at each of the restaurants. Chef Howie’s focus on philanthropy has continued as his restaurants have provided nearly 9,000 meals for healthcare workers and community members in need through a partnership with Jose Andres’s World Central Kitchen. Wildwood Spirits Co. began producing hand sanitizer and has provided hundreds of gallons for first responders and essential workers across King County. The John Howie Restaurant Group has raised more than $20,000 through bottled wine sales and hand sanitizer donations for Big Table, a local organization helping restaurant workers in crisis. Additionally, in partnership with investors, Chef Howie gifted all 300 of his restaurant employees on three separate occasions, whether they were working or not, with food boxes filled with fresh produce, meats and other grocery products.
